In this itinerary, we reveal the sheer scale of the Emperor’s vision, who did not hesitate to modify the sacred heart of the city to align it with the great European capitals. You will discover how the function and aesthetics of Venice were rewritten to serve the new Kingdom of Italy.

  • Piazza San Marco: once the symbol of the Serenissima, it was radically redefined after Napoleon’s arrival in 1797. The demolition of the Church of San Geminiano made way for the neoclassical Ala Napoleonica, today home to the Correr Museum.
  • Doge’s Palace: the historic seat of Venetian power, whose role and function were reconsidered during the French period, reflecting Napoleon’s ambition to modernize the city’s political and ceremonial spaces.
  • Island of San Giorgio Maggiore: the “free port” established by the Emperor, with its distinctive white towers still visible from the basin.
  • The Arsenale: the ancient military heart of the Serenissima , transformed by Napoleon into a modern industrial complex for the imperial war machine.

  • Benedetto Marcello Conservatory (Palazzo Pisani): Palazzo Pisani embodies the transition from aristocratic exclusivity to public musical education. This tour offers rare, behind-the-scenes access to the palace, culminating in a private live performance by students playing original Napoleonic-era scores by composers like Paisiello and Beethoven.   • Teatro La Fenice: during the French occupation, La Fenice became the Empire’s official stage, used to celebrate power through patriotic performances. You will witness how these religious buildings were stripped of their spiritual function and repurposed to train artists and intellectuals for the new Kingdom of Italy, symbolizing art and knowledge placed at the service of the nation.. Napoleon the Visionary: Secret Gardens & Vineyards Tour

 

This itinerary explores how Napoleon reshaped Venice’s urban landscape through the creation of public green spaces, transforming former religious sites into gardens open to the city.

  • Napoleonic Gardens (Castello): created in 1807 by demolishing several religious complexes, these gardens designed by Giannantonio Selva became one of Venice’s first public green spaces, offering a peaceful contrast to the historic center. 
  • San Francesco della Vigna: home to Venice’s oldest urban vineyard, suppressed and repurposed during the Napoleonic period. Today, the restored vineyard produces Harmonia Mundi wine, supporting educational initiatives. 
  • Redentore Garden (Giudecca): a historic convent garden blending spirituality and nature, recently restored and reopened to the public, preserving its contemplative character and organic ecosystem. 
  • Royal Gardens: located between Piazza San Marco and the basin, these Napoleonic-era gardens were restored to their original layout and reopened in 2019, reconnecting green space with the heart of the city.
