Venetian glass is more than a souvenir: it’s a one-of-a-kind piece, made with care and centuries of knowledge. Top Venice offers you the rare opportunity to step behind the scenes of this ancient art with an exclusive class inside a glass factory in Murano. In this private workshop, you’ll meet the master glassmakers who carry forward a tradition that has defined Venetian excellence for centuries.
For one unforgettable day, you’ll not only observe: you’ll feel the heat of the furnace, handle the tools, and follow the rhythm of the laboratory. And if you wish, you can even try the art yourself, becoming (if only for a moment) part of Murano’s living legacy.
If you’re looking to dive deeper into Venetian heritage, we also offer private rowing lessons to learn the traditional art of “voga,” just like the locals have done for centuries.
Discover the beauty of glass making in Venice with a visit to a Murano glass factory
The art of glassmaking in Venice has a long history that spans over 700 years: one of tradition, secrecy, and remarkable creativity. In the late 13th century, the Venetian Republic ordered all glass furnaces to be moved to the island of Murano. The goal was twofold: to protect Venice from the risk of fires, and to guard the closely kept techniques that had made Venetian glass the finest in Europe.
Isolated but flourishing, Murano quickly became a center of excellence. Its artisans refined unique methods that set a new standard for beauty and quality such as filigree, millefiori, crystalline glass, and intricate gold leaf detailing. Today, these Masters open their doors to visitors, offering a rare glimpse into a world that was once hidden.
Create your own Venetian glass piece
Among the most exclusive luxury experiences in Venice, this class invites you into the heart of Murano’s glassmaking tradition.
Your experience begins in one of the most renowned and well-equipped glass furnaces on the island of Murano. Here, ancient techniques are preserved and practiced daily using modern tools and ovens that reach temperatures of up to 1500°C (2732°F), ideal for creating glass of exceptional quality.
After a warm welcome, you’ll meet the Master Glassmaker who will introduce the furnace, the tools used, and the tradition behind each technique. During the tour, you’ll witness a live demonstration of glassmaking, watching as molten glass is skillfully shaped into delicate and elegant forms.
Then comes your turn. Under the close supervision of the Master, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the molten glass yourself. Whether you’re forming a simple shape or experimenting with color and form, every step is adapted to your comfort and curiosity.
To conclude your experience, you’ll visit the furnace’s private gallery: a curated collection of iconic Murano pieces, including historic sculptures, chandeliers, mirrors, and artworks created in collaboration with major international artists such as Picasso and Braque.
As a memento of your day, you’ll receive a certificate of participation, a special gift from the furnace, and your handmade glass piece, delivered directly to your hotel within 24 hours.
